How far schools admitted from, council by council
After each admissions round, councils publish how far away the last child offered a place at each oversubscribed school lived. That figure is the closest thing most English schools have to a catchment. We hold it for 3,627 schools across 88 councils: the middle school admitted from 1.28 miles, the last place at 1,498 went to a child living under a mile away, and 399 reached five miles or more. Pick yours. School sites show you the school; this shows you whether the house gets a child in.

Councils
A council missing from this list has not published its figures in a form we can import, or publishes none. We add councils as their data becomes available and never model a distance where none was published: a modelled estimate is marked as such wherever it appears on this site.
Common questions about admission distances
What is the last distance offered?
After each admissions round, councils publish how far away the last child offered a place at each oversubscribed school lived. It is usually measured in a straight line from the home to the school's gate or main entrance, though some councils use a walking route. It is the closest thing most English schools have to a catchment area, and it describes the last round, not the next.
How far away can you live and still get a school place?
It depends on the school. Across the 3,627 schools with a published figure here, the middle one admitted from 1.28 miles. The last place went to a child living under a mile away at 1,498 of them, and 399 reached five miles or more. Each council's page has its own schools.
Which school admitted from the shortest distance?
Pebble Brook Primary School in Crewe, in Cheshire East: its last place went to a child living 0.02 miles away, about 32 metres in 2025/26, according to the council's published figures.
Does living inside the distance guarantee a place?
No. The distance is where the last round's offers ran out, and it moves every year with how many children apply and where they live. Schools place looked-after children, siblings and sometimes faith applicants before distance, so those groups fill places first.
Why is my council not listed?
Either it has not published its figures in a form that can be imported, or it publishes none. Councils are added as their data becomes available, and a distance is never modelled where none was published.
How do I check one address?
Every school page has a checker: put a postcode in and it is measured against that school's distance. The full property report does the same for every school near an address at once, alongside the house itself.
